Updated on 2025-11-10; it is really fucking cold outside right now! My cat is sleeping on my lap as I type this.
Programming
I've finally started hacking away at my C compiler while reading a well-written book on doing exactly that. I've decided to implement it in Rust, my favorite programming language ever since I picked it up in college (maybe tied with Common Lisp although the use cases are radically different). It's still in the early stages but coming along okay (starting to actually generate assembly at time of writing), and I've found that the nom library has made tokenizing my source code exceptionally easy.
I've had ideas for a few projects, including a Morrowind save editor, a text editor, some Emacs hacks, and my own static site generator, but as I tend to hop around and get nothing done and only explore topics at a surface-level in the process, I'm going to give this compiler an honest go before moving on.
Crochet
After years of not crocheting and wishing I would do it more, I'm back into it! My most recently finished projects include a beanie for myself as well as a scarf and some gloves as gifts, and I'm currently hunting for yarn to start working on more holiday gifts.
Accessories
I discovered I need glasses! My eyesight is decent but just not-decent enough that I was getting regular headaches during and after work or reading. I found a pair of metal, round-framed glasses that really suit me and I find them oddly gender euphoria-inducing.
I also got some helix piercings (ouch!) and love them, and might get…a shitload of more piercings now.
Reading
I've read a lot of books in 2024 and 2025. I'm about to start Devil House by John Darnielle. I picked up this book, along with a record, at a Mountain Goats concert I went to with a friend, and I've been so excited to start reading it; I'm a huge Goats fan but have never read any of Darnielle's novels.
After I finish I'll have to go pick up a new library card as I'll have read all the books I currently own and never got around to getting a new card after I moved earlier this year. I'll likely make a blog post detailing some of my favorite reads of the year at some point before 2026.
Around September I finished Nona the Ninth in a Locked Tomb binge on recommendation, and these books might be my favorite of the year. I say this with the highest praise: Tamysn Muir's books read like Tumblr in the early 2010's.
The last novel I finished was House of Leaves, and holy shit what a book. I'll be thinking about this one for the rest of my life for sure.
I recently ordered the most recent issue of 2600 on a whim. I've not been much of a magazine reader, but I thought I'd try it out to have some physical copies of shorter-form articles to supplement my RSS reader. I love the convenience and searchability of digital writing, but I prefer the sensation of holding the actual pages in my hand, and I like to think it helps me focus better.
Games
Pokemon nostalgia has turned me into the perfect consumer, and I took time off work to play Legends ZA on release. It's definitely the best Pokemon game on the Nintendo Switch, although I'm not sure that says much. It did make me cry, although I'm not too sure if that says much either since I'm easily moved to tears and am stricken by the aforementioned nostalgia.
I also started a new town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf a few weeks ago. I played it a lot when I was younger and it makes my brain feel good.
I still really want to beat Caves of Qud at some point, and I'm also eyeing starting Hollow Knight, since I've never played it before and I have a friend who is super into both it and the sequel.
Music
A friend of mine recently released a new single!
While looking for yarn at a lovely craft store not far from my apartment, I stumbled upon an adorable little neighborhood with some cool restaurants and shops, and among those was a thrift store with a pretty decent record stock. I'm most excited to listen to a record containing the first and second Peer Gynt suites.
Otherwise I've been jamming out to Bright Eyes and Ichiko Aoba basically nonstop. Bright Eyes because they remind me of autumn, and Ichiko Aoba becuase her music is so gentle and sentimental and relaxing.
